What Does a Mobile Growth Agency Do (and When You Need One)

What a mobile growth agency does: UA, ASO, onboarding and CRM run as one system on LTV and CAC, and the four signs you need one.

A mobile growth agency manages the whole path from ad impression to renewal for an app: paid user acquisition, App Store Optimization, onboarding and paywall, CRM and retention, and the attribution data that ties them together. The difference with a media buying agency or an ASO agency is not the list of services. It is that every lever is judged against the same two numbers, lifetime value and customer acquisition cost, rather than each channel optimising its own metric.

What a mobile growth agency actually does

In a typical month at Scalebay, the work for one app looks like this. The paid UA team buys installs on Meta, Google, TikTok and Apple Ads, but bids on the events that predict revenue (trial start, KYC completed, first purchase), not on installs. The ASO team keeps the store listing converting so both paid and organic traffic pays back faster. The CRM team builds the onboarding, push and email flows that turn a day-0 install into a day-30 subscriber. And the data team owns the MMP setup, the cohort model and the weekly readout that decides where next month's budget goes.

None of these is new. What changes when they sit in one team is the order of operations. If store conversion rate drops, UA budget is held rather than scaled into a broken funnel. If a cohort's day-30 retention improves after an onboarding change, bids go up on that geo the same week. If organics fall while paid holds, the first suspect is attribution, not ASO.

How it differs from a media buying agency

A media buying agency is paid to deploy budget efficiently on the channels it runs. That is a real skill, but it stops at the install, or at best at the in-app event the platform can see. It has no view of, and no incentive on, what happens when the store page underperforms, the onboarding leaks 60% of users, or a partner's traffic turns out to be fake.

A mobile growth agency is measured on payback. That changes what it is willing to say: sometimes the right recommendation is to cut spend, fix the paywall, and come back in six weeks.

When you need one

Four situations where the model pays for itself:

  • Your CPI is fine and your ROAS is not. Installs are cheap, revenue does not follow. The problem is between install and purchase, and a channel team cannot fix it.
  • You run three agencies or freelancers and nobody owns the number. UA blames creative, ASO blames UA, CRM blames the product. One team, one model, one weekly number.
  • You are entering a new market. Localised ASO, local creative, local consent rules and local channel mix all have to land at once. Sequencing them is the job.
  • You cannot trust your data. SKAN, ATT, consent, MMP configuration: if the attribution layer is wrong, every decision downstream is wrong. A growth agency fixes the measurement first.

When you don't

If you have a senior in-house growth lead, a working attribution setup and budget above roughly €100k a month, you are usually better served by specialists on specific channels plus an outside audit twice a year. Below €10k a month, the overhead of any agency is hard to justify; a freelancer and a good MMP setup will do.

If you are somewhere in between, or your numbers look like the first two situations above, a 30-minute audit call will tell you which lever is actually broken. Our case studies show what the model looks like on real accounts.
